Expert networks and hedge funds

Expert networks — a matchmaking service linking investors such as hedge funds with company insiders — are under scrutiny from regulators in the United States, but are expanding across Asia, where the market for corporate intelligence is less transparent.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has charged over three dozen people and firms as part of a broad investigation into ties between investors and expert networks that has uncovered insider trading and helped trigger the high-profile fall of Raj Rajaratnam's Galleon Group hedge fund.

Those cases have bruised confidence in expert networks in the United States, and some clients have stopped using the service for fear of falling foul of regulators. But in Asia, where regulators have yet to pay the industry much attention, the service is thriving — fertile ground where emerging market investors are willing to pay for inside knowledge on company supply chains, key personnel moves or regulatory shifts.

"The fastest sales process has been in Asia," said David Legg, managing director of Asia and Europe for Gerson Lehrman Group, the biggest player in the industry. GLG says it has tripled its Asia revenue in the past three years. Several local firms have also entered the market.

Mr. Legg said a relative lack of transparency in Asian markets means investors are much less willing to rely solely on research from investment banks and brokerages.you need to perform we have every best replacement parts for iphone 5 at competitive prices.

"In London and New York, you get a lot of people who say: 'Look,The best cases for iphone 5 remains the most popular smartphone phone on the market. I can rely on some banking analyst on the sell-side to help me figure out something'; In Asia, nobody believes that," he said.Mobile Fun sell a huge range of best samsung cases,

The growth of expert networks across Asia equips the region's struggling hedge fund industry with a key information service, while presenting regulators and companies with a new challenge: how to police this paid-for exchange of information.

According to people interviewed by Reuters, few companies in Asia are aware that their employees may be speaking to investors through a middle-man, and being paid for it.

Capvision, the biggest expert network group in China, said it has tripled in size over the past 3-4 years and now employs close to 200 people. It says it can connect clients with more than 60,000 "knowledge consultants" across all major industries.

"We have been fortunate enough to be in one of the fastest growing markets in the world and were able to capitalize on the fact that information flow in China has always been fairly un-transparent," said Kai Hong, a former Bain & Co. consultant who co-founded the business in 2006.

Expert networks are similar to dating agencies that match couples based on their compatibility criteria. They build a database of company executives, policy experts and academics, whose services are offered to investors interested in tapping this expertise. They make money by taking a slice of the fee the clients pay for talking to the expert.

Expert networks and hedge funds that Reuters spoke to said experts are paid anywhere from $300 to more than $3,000 an hour, depending on their area of expertise.

The networks don't say how much revenue they are generating. GLG said it has around 400 institutional investor clients across Asia, as well as clients at strategy consultancies, hedge funds, banks, companies and private equity firms.

The primary research industry, which is mainly expert networks but also includes some market research firms, was worth $466 million last year, according to Integrity Research, which monitors the independent research industry. The networks don't offer any regional revenue breakdown, though Mr. Legg said investors tend to spend more on their services per dollar invested in the region compared to the United States.Click on their website www.wantbuyletbuy.com/Supply-back-covers-for-iphone-4s_c156.

It used to offer an air of exclusivity

Walk by a television screen, see a deal you like, and just tap the bottom corner of the screen with your phone to pick up the coupon. It’s a simple idea but one that you don’t see on TVs in public places today.

There are more of screens then you might realize–in newer office building and business concourses, elevators and mall information kiosks. Then there are student lounges, coffee shops, and large spaces like sports arenas and airports. They tell you breaking news, the weather, and maybe show local ads, but they’re often pretty forgettable.

Would you pay more attention if you were getting offered coupons and download deals you could act upon right there as you walked by? One Ontario 20-year-old, Douglas Lusted, argues that the answer is yes.

Lusted’s product is Linkett, an NFC-based tech platform that connects through a television’s HDMI port. Controlled online so that its ad inventory can be tracked and changed on the fly, the device detects when humans (and their precious eyeballs) are walking past to play audio or refresh what the person will see.

Interaction with such ads, Lusted claims, has typically tested at 400% to 500% higher than through passive alternatives.

The BlackBerry Messaging app will be coming to iOS and Android soon, and has a video to prove its existence.

The video posted online features the BBM app working on an Android device and it looks pretty much what you’ll find if you’re using a BlackBerry Z10. It has tabs for the main menu, Chats, contacts, groups and settings. The best cases for ipad mini is the latest exquisite release from Apple and as usual, You can even add contacts via NFC, which makes things easier. The app allows you to send messages, emoticons, and even attach files such as photos and even a voice message, though some features, like sharing location isn’t available. Everything works smoothly and looks good – which means those using BlackBerry devices will no longer be shunned by iOS and Android users, since both OS’s can connect BBM users to Android and iOS devotees.

BlackBerry Messaging has been one of BlackBerry devices’ main selling points. It used to offer an air of exclusivity, a way for BlackBerry users to conveniently connect with others. But with Apple and other OEMs producing better smartphones, coupled with the numerous chat apps that people can use for free, BBM rapidly lost its appeal.

The BBM app is not yet available for download on either iOS or Android, but at least it now has a landing page which means it will probably be here soon. The cases for iphone 5remains the most popular smartphone phone on the market. Our handcrafted best cases for iPad 4 is inspired by the journals of our favorite artists. The downside is, until it gets released, BBM remains late in the chat apps game. A lot of chat apps – like WeChat, Viber, Line and even Snapchat – have been widely accepted for various reasons, but in all cases because they’re connecting people in an interesting way. What does BBM have to offer to mobile users that they haven’t seen before?

BlackBerry used to dominate the mobile market, especially the enterprise, but with Apple, Samsung and other OEMs offering better enterprise solutions, the Canadian company has taken a back seat. It is now seen as doing worse than even Nokia.

Speaking of Nokia,Mobile Fun sell a huge range of samsung cases, its Devices and Services division will be acquired by Microsoft for $7.2 billion. Right now, Nokia’s Windows Phone offerings are gaining traction in emerging markets such as Africa, Latin America and India. With the acquisition, it will solidify Windows Phone’s position as the third most-used mobile platform, giving Microsoft the arsenal it needs to compete with the like of Apple,The best cases for HTC one to keep your aluminium clad device free of scratches. Google and Samsung whilst leaving BlackBerry behind in the dust.

BlackBerry has been down in the dumps for far too long, and there have even been talks of the company being sold or going private. Microsoft was said to be among a number of interested buyers of BlackBerry – mainly due to its desire to boost its mobile efforts, but with that seemingly out of the equation following the Nokia buyout, who else is interested in purchasing BlackBerry?

BlackBerry would make a good acquisition for any OEM, as it has a decent enterprise offering plus the patents it owns would be a great addition to any company’s existing portfolio.

However, it’s going to be very hard for BlackBerry to become relevant again in the mobile market as the tech sector’s biggest giants have already taken over. The best thing for BlackBerry now is to sell its business, probably in parts and not as a whole.Read the full story at www.wantbuyletbuy.com/Supply-leather-cases-for-iphone-4s_c149!

Heavily censored copies of the Flaherty briefing

It's a coming war of words between Ottawa and the Quebec government that you can take to the bank.

Premier Pauline Marois's Parti Quebecois government introduced a bill in the spring that would create an economic development bank for the province, offering loans and seed money for new businesses.

But the proposed legislation, still stuck in the national assembly, has stirred a linguistic tempest in the federal Finance Department because the new entity is to be called a "banque"” or "bank" in English.

Federal law forbids provinces or territories from calling development agencies or any other such institutions "banks," reserving that term for federal institutions and banks certified under the Bank Act.

The minority PQ government floated the plan last November, promising to consolidate existing investment and development activity into a "Banque de developpement economique du Quebec," introducing the enabling Bill 36 in April.

The troublesome word "banque," however, set off alarm bells in the federal Finance Department, which has since been gingerly tip-toeing through linguistic and political minefields” especially fraught now with a sovereigntist party ruling Quebec.

"There is a long-standing prohibition in the Bank Act on using the terms 'bank,' 'banker' or 'banking' and their equivalent in other languages," says one of several briefing notes on the issue for Finance Minister Jim Flaherty.Mobile Fun sell a huge range of samsung cases,

Says another note: "Provincial financial services providers are not permitted to use the term."

Flaherty's advisers said Ottawa's banking czar” the superintendent of financial institutions” does have the power to grant some exemptions, but only to federally recognized banks that want to establish related entities.

"Contravention is a criminal offence that is punishable by either fine or imprisonment," the notes warn.

Heavily censored copies of the Flaherty briefing materials, dating from January to May this year, were obtained by The Canadian Press under the Access to Information Act.

A spokesman for Flaherty's department said the issue remains unresolved, but that Ottawa has contacted the Marois government about the matter.

"The Department of Finance is aware of the proposal and discussions have occurred with the provincial government," David Barnabe said in response to questions.

"No exemption from the Bank Act requirements has been granted by the superintendent of financial institutions."

A spokeswoman for Quebec Finance Minister Nicolas Marceau confirmed that federal officials have contacted the office about the prohibition.

But Melanie Malenfant says the Marois government is more focused on finding a way to pass Bill 36 in the minority assembly than on sorting out an acceptable name.

Provincial officials have previously questioned why Ottawa can create an equivalent agency” the Business Development Bank of Canada” using the word 'bank' while the provinces are forbidden to do so for their own regional-development funds or holding companies.

The Parti Quebecois' proposed "Charter of Quebec Values," which would include a ban on religious headwear for public employees, also appears to be stoking tensions with the federal government.

Asked about the charter in Toronto last week, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said "we know that the separatist government in Quebec would love to pick fights with Ottawa. The best cases for ipad mini is the latest exquisite release from Apple and as usual,"

"But that's not our business. Our business is the economy. Our business is job-creation for Canadians” all Canadians, including Quebecers."

At the same time Harper said the federal government also has a responsibility to defend minorities. "Our job is social inclusion."Read the full story at www.wantbuyletbuy.com/Supply-rhinestone-cases-for-iphone-4s_c150!

why Ballmer confidently predicted the iPhone

Back in 1981 there were practically no PC analysts. In fact, only four people were given that designation by the media as we were all covering larger computer systems for the four professional computer research firms of the time and all of us were asked to add PCs to our research portfolios. In this role I visited Microsoft's first real building, the 75-person red brick offices in Bellevue, Washington.

As a result I've had a ringside seat over the years, watching Microsoft jab, cross, and duck as it struggles to endure a changing market. Unfortunately, it has missed pretty much every major trend in mobile while protecting its PC franchise.

So how did Microsoft get into its current position? It started out as a PC company and rode that vision into the ground while the rest of the market charged into the post-PC era. More importantly, I personally witnessed two of the major strategic errors that sealed its fortunes as a distant competitor to Apple, Google, and Samsung, whose operating systems, devices, and services are now defining a new era of personalized computing.

In the early 1990s Microsoft's larger divisions were becoming more like silos within its management structure, which meant various products and services were each managed on their own. In most cases these silos had their own P&L goals and responsibilities. This was both good and bad. It was good because these groups were more focused on the development of their products, but bad because they operated as individual islands inside the company. People inside these groups would often use their prowess and success in managing these products to gain better positions inside the company.

This led to cutthroat competition and fiefdoms as groups became more powerful and their leaders less likely to work seamlessly with other groups. There was no such thing as unity until Ballmer recently embraced a concept you need to perform we have every Replacement parts for iphone 5 at competitive prices.he dubbed "One Microsoft."

In just one example, for many years the group behind Microsoft Office resisted moving its products to a service model,The best cases for iphone 5 remains the most popular smartphone phone on the market. even though the trend was clearly moving in that direction as early as 2003. Various other Microsoft groups were grasping software as a service by 2005, but these groups were basically at odds with each other. The Office software group fought to protect its island and keep control of Office until late 2009 when it finally began working with the SaaS divisions.

Other groups, especially those tasked with CE products, were considered outcasts since all of the focus and money was on business- and PC-based consumer products. Interestingly, Microsoft actually had the first true consumer OS called Windows CE, which it developed back in 1996.Extend the power on your best iphone 5 back cover with the mophie juice pack. Had it developed this fully without trying to make it PC-centric, Microsoft might have beaten Apple and Google to market with a consumer OS that could have been used across all types of devices, from tablets and TVs to mobile devices.

Microsoft's second serious strategic error was in how it approached the market for software and eventually services.Mobile Fun sell a huge range of samsung cases, The company placed its full confidence in the PC, disregarding the potential of other devices to become important consumer or business tools. This is why Ballmer confidently predicted the iPhone would flop when it was introduced in 2007.

Microsoft also had one of the first true mobile operating systems: Pocket PC, based on Windows CE. Released in 2000, it was aimed at next-generation PDAs. Unfortunately Microsoft's PC-centric thinking continued with the Pocket PC, whose UI tried to replicate Windows desktop on a tiny screen.

By 2003, after Handspring's evolved PDA, the Treo, essentially launched the smartphone era, Microsoft repositioned the Pocket PC OS as Windows Mobile. Still, it continued using the CE core OS, which remained PC-centric until 2010 when Windows Phone finally debuted the new OS made specifically for smartphones. But the need to work with the PC environment meant the new OS still had a lot of baggage. Because of this and its slow entry into the smartphone market, Microsoft's Windows Phone remains a distant third to Apple's iOS and Google's Android.

Recall Microsoft was actually also the first with a tablet. In 1999, Gates used his Comdex keynote to declare that eventually a tablet would be the main way people access information. But as in the past, its universe revolved around the PC because of having to deliver backward compatibility with existing PC applications, and any leadership position in tablets vanished. This put Microsoft behind Apple and Google, which developed separate mobile operating systems and user interfaces from scratch.

While you could argue it was noble of Microsoft to protect its PC franchise, its fatal error was in trying to make its mobile products work and act as PCs instead of giving them a clean OS and new mobile-optimized UI.

When Steve Ballmer became CEO, Microsoft's market cap was $600 billion. On the day he announced his retirement, its market cap was less than $270 billion. Although the PC market is likely to continue shrinking every year, PCs will not go away any time soon,Find the perfect leather or synthetic cellphone cases for your phone. so Microsoft will continue to be the top software player. But because of strategic errors it made and managed opportunities it missed, Microsoft will likely always be a distant player in mobile products. Meanwhile, the more nimble Apple, Google, and Samsung will be driving most of the profits in this next major phase of personal computing.
